⚡ ABB charging guide

ABB charging solutions: home, business, public and fleet charging

ABB E-mobility offers connected AC wallboxes and DC charging systems for homes, workplaces, retail, public networks and fleets. The correct solution depends on how long vehicles remain parked, the available power and the number of users.

ABB Terra AC Wallbox

Connected AC charging for homes and businesses

The Terra AC Wallbox is available in IEC versions up to 7.4 kW single-phase and up to 22 kW three-phase. It supports Type 2 connections, built-in energy metering, load-management integration, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth and selected 4G variants, with OCPP 1.6 and RFID/app authentication.

Best for: homes, apartment parking, workplaces, hotels and sites where vehicles remain parked for several hours.
02

Compact ABB DC fast charging

Faster charging for retail, dealerships and public sites

Compact DC stations bypass the vehicle’s onboard AC charger and supply controlled DC power directly to the battery. Output and connector configuration vary by model and market, so the site design must be matched to the vehicles and expected traffic.

Best for: car dealerships, convenience locations, urban charging, service centres and fleets needing shorter stops.
03

ABB Terra 360

High-power public charging up to 360 kW

Terra 360 can scale power from 90 kW up to 360 kW and can serve up to four vehicles at once, depending on the configured system. It is designed for public charging, retail destinations and commercial fleets where high throughput is required.

Best for: high-traffic public sites, fuel stations, shopping centres and commercial fleet hubs.
04

Fleet and depot charging

Charging systems designed around vehicle schedules

ABB provides site-level charging solutions for light vehicles, vans, trucks and buses. Depot systems can distribute available power across several charging points and coordinate charging with dwell time, route schedules and grid limits.

Best for: company fleets, delivery depots, public transport operators and logistics sites.
05

Smart management and connectivity

Monitoring, access control and energy management

Connected ABB systems can combine charger monitoring, user authorization, software updates and energy management. Dynamic load management is especially useful where several chargers share a limited building connection.

Best for: multi-user sites that need control, reporting, remote support or expansion over time.

AC or DC: which ABB solution fits the site?

AC charging

Usually the most practical choice for homes, workplaces and overnight parking. Installation is simpler and the vehicle’s onboard charger sets the final charging rate.

DC charging

Chosen when vehicles must receive substantial energy during a shorter stop. It requires much greater electrical capacity, engineering and often utility coordination.

What should be checked before installing an ABB charger?

Vehicle connector and maximum AC/DC charging rateAvailable power, main switchboard capacity and utility limitsNumber of chargers now and planned expansionCable sizes, distance, voltage drop and heat conditionsProtective devices, earthing and surge protectionNetwork connection, RFID/app access, OCPP and load management
High-power DC charging is a project, not only a wall-mounted product. It may require a dedicated transformer, upgraded service connection, civil works, cooling clearances and coordination with the electricity supplier.
